Recent podcast statistics for 2021 from Edison Research and Triton Digital have been released in the annual study, The Infinite Dial.
This research is now in its 23rd anniversary and is widely considered to be the best available on podcasting and audio habits. I encourage you to obtain the complete study for free. It contains a lot more insight than what I have summarized here.

78% of Americans Are Now Familiar With Podcasting
This is an estimated 222 million people, an increase of 10,000,000 in one year — a 4.72% rise.
57% of Americans have listened to podcasts.
This is an increase of 55% in 2020, and 51% in 2019, respectively. This means that approximately three quarters of people who are familiarized with podcasts have actually listened.
Podcast listeners have grown by 29.5% over three years
In 2018, 44% of Americans aged 12 and older had listened, compared with 57% in 2021.

A podcast will be listened to by 116 million people monthly in 2021.
In 3 years, the monthly podcast listeners have grown to 61.5%
Podcasts were listened to by 26% of Americans aged 12 and older in 2018, compared to 41% for 2021.

In 2021, 56% (from 12-34 years old) listen to at most one podcast per month. This compares to 49% in 2020.
The number of older Americans listening to podcasts is growing fastest among them.
Between 2020 and 2021, 18% more Americans 55+ listened to podcasts each month. More than one quarter of all Americans 55+ listen to podcasts monthly.
Every week, more Americans listen to podcasts than have Netflix accounts
28%, or 80 million Americans, will be weekly podcast listeners in 2021. The number of weekly podcast listeners is now 10 times greater than the 69,000,000 Netflix account holders in the U.S. This could be a sign that audio media is moving away from video.
Weekly Podcast listeners tune in on average 8 podcasts per week
Podcast listeners typically listen to 8 podcasts per week. Hard-core podcast listeners can alter this average. 40% of weekly podcast listeners only listen to 1-3 podcasts per semaine, while 19% listens to 11 or more podcasts. Listeners listen to more podcasts each week than in 2020, when 51% of listeners only listened to 1-3 podcasts per semaine.
Nearly a quarter of Americans now have “Smart Speakers” installed in their homes
Amazon has led significant growth in smart speaker ownership. Between 2020 and 2021, smart speaker ownership increased by 22%. Smart speaker ownership is increasing, which gives owners more options to listen to podcasts from home. Sales of at-home entertainment devices such as smart speakers have increased over last year.
